Pinus Maritima, from which this Maritime Pine Essential oil is distilled, grows all over the Mediterranean and, for the past 150 years, in South Africa where it was introduced and is now considered an invasive species. The tree likes hot dry summers and cool wet winters which is why it thrives around the Mediterranean and in the southern most part of the Cape of South Africa. It prefers a slightly acidic soil. It is often confused with the Black Pine or the Cluster Pine but is in fact a close relation growing in the same kind of habitat.
Traditional Uses for Maritime Pine Essential Oil:-
The essential oil is a source of flavonoids, catechins, proanthocyanidins and phenolic acids. The patented extract Pycn0genol is from this tree. The oil contains natural antioxidants and like all the pines, is anti-inflammatory and considered to help boost the body’s immune and veinous systems.
History:-
The Pine was used by the Native Americans to prevent scurvy and the needles were used to stuff mattresses and to repel lice and fleas. The ancient Egyptians used the pine kernels in their cooking.
CAUTIONS:Although pine and pine needle oil is considered safe since it is non-toxic and non-irritant it should still be used with care on the skin since it can cause irritation in high dosage and may sensitize the skin as well.
