Pleurisy Root (Asclepias tuberosa) commonly known as Butterfly Weed or Milkweed is traditionally used in herbal medicine to aid in the treatment of bronchial or respiratory issues such as coughs, bronchitis and pleurisy (hence its name) It is thought to help clear lungs (an expectorant) by loosening phlegm and has also has been used to induce sweating.
It is native to eastern and southwestern North America and is commonly known as Butterfly Weed because Butterflies are particularly attracted to the plant by both its colour and its predigious production of nectar
First Nationals and European pioneers used the boiled roots to treat diarrhoea and respiratory illnesses.The young seed pods were used as food after being boiled in several changes of water. The seed pod down was spun and used to make candle wicks.
